Marcin Rychter, “Is there Postmodernism in Music?” October 2, 2019, 7:00 PM

The lecture is here. The AIPCT is pleased to announce the residency lecture of Marcin Rychter, Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dr. Rychter has been in residence at AIPCT from mid-August to early October of 2019, and is part of an exchange program between SIUC and the University of Warsaw (Poland), where Dr. Rychter holds his permanent appointment. He specializes in the philosophy of music and the philosophy of culture.

The lecture characterizes contemporary music’s “culture” by identifying a dialectic tension between “modern” and “postmodern” currents in it. After initial considerations on the manifold usage of the term “postmodernism,” five composers’ approaches are analyzed: John Cage, Philip Glass (and other minimalists), Bernhard Lang, Mauricio Kagel, and Johannes Kreidler. However different they may be, all these composers undermine, in various ways, the practice and theoretical background of the modernist, avant-garde music.

All AIPCT lectures and seminars are free and open to the public. This event is co-sponsored by the SIUC Department of Philosophy. Doors open at 6:30. Attendees are welcome to bring drinks and snacks. Light refreshments, including beer and wine, will also be provided.
