AIPCT is pleased to host a reception for Steven Fesmire, SIU alumnus, environmental philosopher, and prominent Dewey scholar. Light refreshments and libations will be provided. The reception will be from 6:00-9:00 PM, Thursday, April 24, 2025. Professor Fesmire will be speaking at the Center for Dewey Studies (SIU campus, basement of Morris Library) at 11am. Details are here. All friends of philosophical and cultural thought are invited. One does not have to attend the lecture to come to the reception.
Steven Fesmire took his Ph.D. at SIUC, and has held appointments at Lambuth University, Easte Tennessee State University, Green Mountain College (Vermont) and is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Radford University. He is and past President of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy
He is the author Beyond Moral Fundamentalism: Toward a Pragmatic Pluralism (Oxford University Press,
2024). He edited The Oxford Handbook of Dewey (Oxford University Press, 2023), and his books John Dewey
and Moral Imagination (Indiana University Press, 2003) and Dewey (Routledge Press, 2015) won Choice
“Outstanding Academic Title” awards. A 2009 Fulbright Scholar in Japan, Fesmire’s public philosophy work
has appeared in places like Salon, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and The Humanist.
